Steady rain falls as we gird our loins in anticipation of significant precipitation.  Associated gusts and gales are still out on to sea but puffing precursors are making their plans known with whitecaps on the horizon.  55F degrees as the storm brings warmth but no welcoming embraces.  Lo the misguided few seeking solitary slides upon challenging waters.  Today may not be your day..... or is it?



CHANNEL: High-ish tides mix with swirling winds as we are beset but the first or a series of storm fronts.  Meteorologists predict much rain and chaos and the truth is just upon us.  Be not mislead by unsupported data or grinning fools as the day is ripe for adventure but take heed before advancing upon the ocean.

52 degrees with clearing skies and temps sure to rise as we greet the new month and the beginning of the end. Raise high the roof beams indeed, as by day's demise, sorrow will reign. At present, a large portion of the population is getting in, getting out, or getting taken. Parking? You must have lost your mind. Line-ups that resemble DMV lines? Ohhhhhh yeah. Solid, but not epic as we approach  late-morning low tide vectors. Perhaps the crowds thin, and post-luncheon sessions bring smiles and slides...



CHANNEL: Rare sets of merit have every soul chasing a bouncing ball. Take off points spread far and wide as all seem certain they can read the future. Just enough action remains as waters recede to show promise and stoke an inner fire. Expect a crowd if you bring it on down, and remember, there's no parking on the dance floor.

PATCH: Like a bird on a wire, the masses do gather with the hopes of rides and glides. Multiple figures cast shadows on outside peelers, and arms flap and teeth grind as several souls shoot for the same prize. Over the shoulder menacing glances and epoxy dances await you. It's all over but the shouting.

Step inside! Step inside! We're so glad you have arrived. Leap day has brought the promise of mild temps and a confused, if determined W with it. Rare moments of clarity are currently surrounded by large groups and chaos. Heaving and churning leaves only longing and yearning. The tide is currently on it's way out, and taking the party with it. Here come the cops, make a run for it.


CHANNEL: A game of cat-and-mouse with shapes of consequence is being  played by most of the neighborhood at present, and we are all losing. Boat ramp vectors and shortboard hecklers are all that await one at present. Look towards the afternoon hours to provide any substance. There's a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in.

PATCH: Several dozens of the suited and booted make for log-jams and gridlock. Forms currently in underwhelming size and questionable quality are stopping no one. Incidents with flaring tempers have already been reported. Keep an eye on your six.

We wake up this morning and are reminded that it is indeed February and not July. The night's cold still lingering and the sun is keeping itself tucked away. Beach access possible but for best result come at low tide. As for the water, crowds only grow and space seems to be limited. 


CHANNEL: Five gather forming a question of 'why?' The answer is not yet known, come and solve for yourself.

PATCH: The place to be this morning is definitely here as we see the masses gather. 20+ heads bobbing and only more to come. Knee high rollers can be seen along the horizon and they carry little speed. May be fun if you can beat your neighbor to the finish line but volume and length is necessary

Early fog prevails and presides, keeping tempers tamped but ready to flare and the winds at bay as well.  Temps drizzle in at 52F and last nights sprinkle barely dampened the domain and sunlight appears as if by magic to dry and warm.  Hearty helpings of W swell still residing within the deep blue.  Draining tide has currents dictating direction of travel but the comeback begins now and should hold through the day.  The long migration of surfers looking for slides of consequence begins as the weekend unfolds in all its majesty.  Resolute in their pursuit - they will not be denied or deterred by facts or data.   


CHANNEL: Braddah J holds it down as wide rollers release their pent up frustrations on the outside revelers.  Plentiful peaks and dotted with all manner of player.  Inner bars start to reclaim their elevated status as tide pushes back and grabs hold of the sand below.  Expect a full line up throughout the day as Summer in February draws participants.  Don't forget to "check him out."

PATCH: Travel to the heart of darkness with the fine masses as they seek the highest level of enlightenment.  False prophesies unfold and questions shall remain unanswered.   Blindingly brilliant light assaults all eyes and levels the playing field. Find the islands of complexity within the lessor regions with old curmudgeons and youth brigade leaders as crests form, reveal, revert and rejuvenate leading to lengthy rides heading both left and right all at one time.

Somewhat settled as coastal fog invests and the creatures of the night begin to stir and unwind.  Morning mild temps of 53F may yield to our most recent bout of warmth but that still remains to be seen. I've got a heavy coat, it's filled with rocks and sand and if I lose it I'll be coming back today.  Still a full dose of W swell in the water though its direction and focus are not optimized for the Bolinas coast.  It is delivering energy in random areas and again the parking lot fills with hopeful sliders seeking moments of glory.  Hey you gotta pay your dues before you pay the rent.

Furious energy and frenzied patronage as we great another magnificent Spring day with feelings of Summer in the air.  Though current temps are only 49F the sky is clear and brilliantly sunlight.  Calm winds are providing the smoothing conditions to help the situation and bikini bathers have already being observed in the wee hours.  Racked out W swell has capacity to deliver heaving seas and though our hamlet is relatively protected a few dicey ones may slip past the goalie.  All manner of watercraft are breaching the breakers and some are sliding gracefully along while others seek the line upon which to set their course of destiny.  

CHANNEL: As horizontal travels are upon one's mind we gaze upon wide open swaths of rollers not fully formed or functional.  With W swell peaked and holding forth, the opportunity for healthy doses of briny bombers is upon us though picking one's spot will determine the rewards.  



PATCH: As the low tide pushes back seekers travel elongated distances to sample the daily offerings.  Open beach access and plentiful peaks are the current draw but be mindful of the shape and shadow cast.  The farthest depths seem to hold the promise of engaging rides while inner regions sputter and pop in an attempt to form fragments into a whole.

There is much activity and scuttlebutt in the early hours as the temps struggle to reach 50 degrees. Available parking is already a distant and bitter memory as the promise of an incoming W has the usual suspects and your friends and neighbors in a FOMO panic. Is this behavior justified by current conditions? Not if one appraises critically, but as that so rarely happens, stare into the current chaos and know that it's only a matter of finding the right line.

CHANNEL: Here, there, and everywhere. You, me, and everyone we know. Inside and outside, they all attempt slides. With one drawback, though a crowd sits at any and all service windows, nourishment is hardly being offered, as there is more size and greater overall activity than in recent days, but unformed and wind-blown makes not for epic stoke. This has stopped no one, won't you join them?



PATCH: Though any and all routes are being traversed and the clear promise of treasure has many souls engaged, rides and slides of consequence are not being observed at present. As is the case just yards away, there is sound and fury, but clean and mean it's not. Look for afternoon high tide to only add volume to the already crowded seascape.

Though a brittle sunlight brings with it the crispness of Spring, a determined chill hangs in the air as if an unwelcome house guest. The tide rises at present, and it is both colder and warmer than the calendar would indicate. Wisps of fog defy the natural process and hang low in damp tree limbs. Even the concept of a beach has disappeared, leaving only teeming whitewater, concrete, and caution in it's stead. The remaining swell has all but become a ghost, as we look towards the immediate future that seems eons removed from conditions at present.

CHANNEL: Gulls and lulls as a stillness hangs over like a wool blanket. The words of the prophet are written on the subway walls...



PATCH: A half dozen of the fiercely determined have but hope on which to slide, as even a lengthy paddle to far outside provinces is not offering much more than micro-peelers and smile stealers. As is so often the case, with a log of consequence and clear vision, you may reap something from a ceaseless nothing, but that is up to you....

The sun is on the rise as is the temperature. Feeling extra chilly at the moment with a bitter breeze keeping the day cold. The masses gather regardless and steal the streets. No beach access during high tides but may be a good day for the beach if you time it just right.

CHANNEL: Long lulls have the crowd watch and wait. A let down if you were here yesterday as what was left of the swell seems to have run it's course. Slow and some shape, insignificant and knee high.

Mellowed mayhem with winds gone slack and surface smoothing a reality.  Still a healthy dose of NW swell in the water backed up with a hint of S as well.  Relatively high tides are still filling in keeping the areas flooded and warbled as the sun rises and the skies clear.  Modest masses approaching with interest and consideration though visions currently outweigh the reality.    

CHANNEL: Significant improvement over the past few days from nothing to something speaks volumes at low volume.  Portent of breakers has prognosticators debating an entry and exit strategy while the suited and booted navigate the lower ramp levels.  Bumps and humps have capacity to deliver slides alas many roll along unbroken seeking purchase upon a lesser bar.  What is being offered up for the partaking is best suited for loggers and the likes and shows a range up to waist in height with varying length less than long.

Stormy and solemn as stiff SW winds blow and shred while the scent of eucalyptus and crushed acorn fills that nasal senses.  Swirling clouds and misty fog provides the backdrop to the dour proceedings as portals of sun demand to break through.  Ramp dancing and no romancing as inquisitive sliders find themselves pinned to the wall and soaked to the socks.  Take the plunge if you are willing and able.  Luxuriate in the absence of crowds.  The overall effort may be worth the expenditure.   

CHANNEL: No noticeable shapes of integrity have formed or threatened.  A billowing high tide has the overall area swamped and swallowed under a cloud of gloom.  Partake only with high hopes and low expectations. 



PATCH: Thoroughly thrashed by wind and water level with no takers but few shakers as the damp decide the next move.  Resoundingly refusing to release waves no matter how determined one might be to argue the obvious.

Overnight deluges now giving way to clearing skies and drying eyes.  A moderate helping of sunshine is facilitating the transformation as pavement pathways begin to heal amid flash downpours. Recent storms have left the ocean a shambles but that is not stopping a heady few from ambling down to take a look and make decisions.  All activity seems focused directly out front while formidable tides take their toll upon the ramp and diffuse the real surf from making an appearance. 

CHANNEL: A shadow of a once glorious wave as shell games are played and nothing acts accordingly.  Take the bait and switch but be mindful of the lackluster pace at which waves are progressing this morning.  Tread lightly as well during the dropping tide as its pull will be triumphantly strong.

Mid-tide vectors met by concrete connectors as canines seemingly act as swell detectors under clear blue skies at this hour. A blazing sunshine already bestowing it's warming qualities upon us as the breezes are a non-issue. The chaos of the holiday weekend has passed, and all that remains are a half dozen stalwarts and the usual faces and places. A rare day in that all action takes place front and center, as the shapes being enjoyed currently happen in shallow waters that feel only feet from the river's edge...

CHANNEL: One would be hard-pressed to define this morning's action as taking place in the channel, but sometimes one is so far inside as to be outside, so we will judge the matter settled. Egg and log meet with mild success as waist is the place and rides are measured in moments. As is so often the case, the best is made of underwhelming conditions, as it only asks the exchange of one's time...



PATCH: The silence in deafening. You thought that was the ocean in a shell? those were only echoes....

The current temps suggest Spring is here to stay as we stop and greet another morning in a surrealistic pillow. The zephyrs seem to be sleeping in, as almost glassy conditions abound. Tides are in retrograde as of mid-morning and are welcoming all watercraft and those seeking adventure. Parking dissolves with the morning mist and bodies appear clad in neoprene from the shadows. Expect to keep an eye over your shoulder, as the line-up promises to be thick with opportunity for unscheduled board meetings. Flagship of the fleet indeed....

CHANNEL: Though far from conditions she can offer up, sliders in multitude sit upon unclear futures. Shapes appear, and before one can react, are gone into a miasma of whitewater and blue emotion. Let not these facts deter you, as there are those claiming you merely missed shapes of legend and consequence....



PATCH: Lo! the faithful masses have gathered, and Monday services are packed to the rafters! Those feeling the spirit bob and weave their ways through the WNW mix. Gems are being mined, but traffic congestion is already an issue. Mind the right of way and get in where you fit in, or just force your way, that's more common in circumstances such as these...

Tis a crisp and beautiful sun shinning morning we have been having all for ourselves. Many young folk, as well as whippersnappers loving the 55* f, and a little surf on top. Forecasts for our bo beach region are up and the crowd  are here in the 10's. Tidal rising (regular on our planet) should drastically improve all of our days. The birds are singing and radical prophesies are prophesied, by me. Bring your dog and let them mingle, they're much better at communication than us.   

CHANNEL: Backwards and forwards and all up and around it self. I have seen my cat recently cough up something similar. That being said, there is one brave soul in the water who clearly does not want to go surfing. Maybe if your a lucky one, but I might love an equal and opposite tide. Wet your whistle and wait. Bring a big board and you may see some double ups and bow ties.


PATCH: Solemn course of rocks and baby rips with some knee to waist high surf all the way on the 5th reef! 20 gentle men and women, gently sliding across the surface of our wonderful oceanic puddles. Little ripple ridding water bathers I say. Tidal influx will happen and more little slippers will show. Get excited, very excited.... but not overly excited. Respect is the name of the game.

Daily Surf Report - 2/13/2016

Swell energy holds steady and brings the schemers and dreamers seeking waves of virtue and attainability.  An early mix of coastal overcast has winds non existent though a permeating chill of 47F.  Now giving way to full sunshine and radiance.  Again we battle against a dropping morning tide that reveals wide margins of beach and stone while foiling plans for groomed breakers. There is plenty of opportunity present and most activity is currently centered on donning suit and boots and hurrying to greet the ocean.    

CHANNEL: Not as composed as yesterday with folding breakers directly in front of the boat ramp getting the most looks and personal attention.  The occasional left in the Channel signifies a rallying point for those of the goofy persuasion but the apparition is relatively short-lived.  The Seadrift enclave still seems to be soaking up the directional offerings and rights of length rather than size are in the outcome.  A mixed bag with something for everyone and still leaving desires unfulfilled. 



PATCH: With fading S swell and a full tilt NW the Patch seems to have taken a liking to the factors and is joining the party in earnest today.  Not organized or correctly formed but still showing signs of life and magnetizing most with its tragic pull.  Smooth peaks have been known to pop yet the where is all over the watery map.  Logs and shortboards are making the pilgrimage forth and if you are so drawn keep your hopes even and conservative.
